Beachcombers – Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside. Do you? That’s good, because you’re about to become an expert beachcomber and it’s just about one of the only places we’re allowed to go and walk around freely in this lockdown hoohaa!
Head to your nearest beach to look for interesting and unusual objects, using your senses to spot, sniff and seek them out. Have you seen the rock pools yet? You can take a peek into the cool water to learn about the weird and wonderful animals and plants in their microhabitats. Maybe you can kick back in a deckchair and do a little reading. What’s your favourite book about the seashore? Why not invent an amazing rock pool resident. What features will it need to survive happily in its watery habitat? Make a 3-D model of your plant or creature. Got your shorts and sunglasses on? Bucket and spade at the ready? I wish we could all go beachcombing together!

Mental Health and Wellbeing
Here are some resources to help you talk with your child about their mental health and wellbeing during this time. This lesson from the PSHE association is all about feelings and emotions and will help your child to recognise different feelings in themselves and others, identify that people can feel differently about things and situations and explain who can help them with their feelings.
This is great starting point to check in with your child on how they are feeling about the current situation. If you need any advice or further resources please contact me on class dojo.
Mental Health (Year 1-2) – Home Learning Lesson
Transition
Acknowledging the impact of school closures, the lessons encourage pupils to reflect on the range of opportunities and challenges that they might experience as they move from one key stage to the next, as well as how they can manage these. Pupils will also be able to analyse different sources of support and assess who and what can help them, both during school closures and in the future. Finally, pupils are given the opportunity to celebrate their successes in school so far.
This lesson will help pupils to;
- Identify feelings about moving to the next key stage
- Explore the impact of school closures on transition
- Describe the changes that can occur as they move to the next key stage
- Assess the challenges of transition and strategies to manage these
- Identify sources of support

In school we have been creating our own puppet shows of our favourite stories!
We have taken inspiration from Y1 and the amazing Miss Palmer and chosen our favourite picture book and then created our own puppets and stages ready to film a dramatic retelling of our favourite story!
You could choose a book we have read together; The Pirates Next Door, The Highway Rat, Love Bugs… or you could choose your favourite story you have at home!
Once you have made all the parts, get an adult to film you retelling your story using your puppets and send it to me so we can watch it at school!
I will post the videos from the children in school this week, or if you can’t wait you could watch Y1’s videos for inspiration!

This week at school we have started to make fact files on important People of Colour from History. You could make your own too!
We have been looking at people like Martin Luther King, Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks. We started by researching and asking a few questions like when/where were they born? What did they do? Why are they important?
You could use these templates and create your own fact files, do as many as you want! There are plenty of important people to choose from!

These SPaG activity mats are a good starter activity to recap some of the things you will know!
This week we will also look at Commas in a list.
Commas are used whenever we write lists of things. Birthday lists, shopping lists, lists of ingredients and even lists of lists! (See what I did there!) BBC Bitesize has done some fun videos explaining how to use commas in a list.
These worksheets are similar to the Maths ones we do. There will be a Varied Fluency sheet for you to practice the skill and then Application and Reasoning for you to apply that skill and use it in context. As usual only do one sheet, whatever colour you usually start on.

This week in Maths we are going to look at time! We have already looked at this briefly in January and you were all fab at telling the time using the minute and hour hand.
If you need a refresher, our friend Amber has some lovely videos explaining o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past.
She then looks at reading minutes past and to the hour. We haven’t looked at this together yet, but you might already be really good at it!
Watch this video and then have a go at the worksheets below. Remember to pace yourself, only do one or two a day! And remember each section gets harder and harder so don’t push yourself too hard!

Research Captain Cook – Find out all about the famous explorer Captain Cook and present your findings in any way you want. It could be a powerpoint, a poster, a fact file… whatever you want!!
Phonics/Spelling
This week in phonics we are looking at Homophones and Near Homophones. This is one of my favourite things to teach, you can have so much fun with the different words!
Some words sound the same or very similar but they are spelt differently and have different meanings. These words are called homophones or near homophones. Sometimes there are more than two spellings of a word.
Words like…
- here – hear
- plane – plain
- sea – see
- eye – I
- two – to – too
Can you think of any other homophones? Write them down on a piece of paper…
You could create your own game of pairs to practice reading and writing homophones and near homophones. Write as many pairs as you can think of on different pieces of paper and then turn them over. Take it in turns to pick a piece of paper and see if you can match the pairs up!

Monday – Write a Thank You or Apology letter as one of the residents from Dul-on-Sea to the pirates. Think about how they changed their minds; what do they think now and why?
Tuesday – What might Tilda get up to when she goes to visit Jim Lad? Write a diary entry about her adventures.
For the rest of the week I would like you to write a book review of the pirates next door. This should take you a few days as I want you to think about a lot of different things. You can create your own or use the template below, but make sure you have a lot at the template so you know all the things you need to include.

This week in phonics we are looking at the suffixes -ful, -less and -ly. As well as the common exception words
Usually –ful and –less are added to the end of words to make adjectives. Adjectives with –ful mean ‘full of’; –less means ‘without’. We add the suffix -ly to adjectives to create adverbs. Adverbs are used to describe a verb.

This week I want you to write a newspaper article about the arrival of an unusual family in Dul-on-Sea.
Remember our writing process – features, plan, draft, edit, write.
We always start by looking at different examples of what kind of writing we are doing. So start by having a look at different newspaper reports. Think about their features, what do they all have to have to make them look like newspapers.
Then you can start to think about your content. Plan what you want to write. When writing newspapers we often think of what, when, where, who, why, how questions. So you could try writing sentences about the following things to plan your report.
- What happened? Describe the event – remember to use adjectives.
- When did it happen? Tell your readers about when it happened, what time of day was it? What time of year?
- Where has it happened? Talk about the town, what is it usually like?
- Who does it involve? Who was there? Who has arrived?
- Why has it happened? What do they want? What do you think is going to happen?
Remember you are writing from the point of view of a person who lives in Dul-on-Sea, not Matilda or Jim-Lad.
Once you have planned your writing you can start putting your report together. Remember the features that you need to include and write in your best handwriting.

This week we are going to continue looking at Position and Direction. The two objectives we need to look at and master are;
- order and arrange combinations of mathematical objects in patterns and sequences.
- use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement, including movement in a straight line and distinguishing between rotation as a turn and in terms of right angles for quarter, half and three-quarter turns (clockwise and anti-clockwise)
You have already done lots of work on this last week, so will be familiar with some of the words and questions already. The worksheets I have uploaded are set out in three different stages – A – easier, B – medium and C – tricky. Try to do as many questions as you can for each sheet.

This week in maths we would have been doing position and direction, thinking all about movement and turns. I have uploaded some activities for you to try at home. Please just use what works best for you – they are just intended to give you some help when introducing this concept.
Mrs Trevis and Miss Martin have come up with some good ideas – You could have a go at creating a pirate treasure map and then writing instructions for it using language to describe movement, you create a maze in your garden and guide an adult through it, write step by step instructions on how to follow your favourite government approved daily walk… the possibilities are endless.

Before we start I want you to look at the front cover and think about what you think this book might be about! You will know lots about pirates already from your research so I want you to use all of that knowledge you have gathered and have a think about what you think will happen in this book? Where do you think it will be set? What kind of a story will it be? Who will be the main characters? Don’t forget to look at the pictures and justify your ideas.

Wednesday 25th – English and a bit of Science mixed in!
Go outside and find lots of different flowers and leaves to make your own herbarium (a collection of dried flowers and leaves) You could even write your own poem to go along with your herbarium! Watch this video for an explanation! This project will take you a few days so have fun with it!
Monday 23rd March
This week we are going to write our own instructions for planting a seed. You could still work towards doing this if you want to or you could write a set of instructions on how to wash your hands or how to make a sandwich.
First step is to have a go at doing the activity you want to write your instructions for.
Then you need to plan your writing. Think about each step carefully and consider what imperative verbs, adverbs and time conjunctions you could use.
Finally have a go at creating your own set of instructions.
Remember to stop after each sentence and read it back and check your writing for capital letters, full stops, correct spellings etc. I have uploaded a checklist for you to help with your writing.

Tuesday 17th – We are recapping adding and subtracting two digit numbers and ones. We were either counting up or down, or partitioning the two digit number to add the one and then adding the tens back on. Here is the worksheet we used.
Wednesday 18th – Today we looked at adding and subtracting two digit numbers and tens. We talked about the tens and the ones column and how the ones doesn’t change when we add multiples of ten. Here is the worksheet we used.

We have been writing a recount of what we did during last week’s science week. We have talked about separating our writing into paragraphs for each day of Science Week and using conjunctions (because, and, so, but, if, when etc) to add more information to our writing. Here is the checklist we used to help us to remember what we needed to include.

This week we are looking at contractions – using apostrophes to replace missing letters in words like can’t, we’d, I’ve, couldn’t, you’ll, should’ve, didn’t, could’ve. We are also looking at the common exception words aunt and father. You could do a contraction hunt and use a book or magazine to find as many contracted words as possible or make your own contraction pairs game to match the contracted words with the original.
