We have a fantastic Year ahead in Year 4! We have already travelled back to the time of of the Roman Empire to learn all about Roman life, as well as going on a trip to Vindolanda Roman fort and museum to experience life on Hadrian’s Wall.
This half term we are building on a our previous science work on states of matter and exploring how the water cycle works. In the New Year our topics will have us venture up Mountains, go back through the Dark Ages and meet the Villainous Vikings and Stormin’ Normans. We will then finish the year learning all about climate change, how it is caused and how we can join the fight to combat it.
Spring term 1 in Year 4:
Plan, write and edit a setting description for Mordor from Lord of the Rings.
Retrieve and record information from non-fiction to create a travel brochure using words and phrases that capture the readers interest and imagination.
Poetry – Limericks
Plan, write and edit a limerick. Then perform their own compositions, using appropriate intonation, volume and movements so that meaning is clear.
Convert between different units of measure
Measure and calculate perimeter of rectilinear figures in centimetres and metres
Find the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares
Estimate, compare and calculate different measures – including money
Read, write and convert time between analogue and digital clocks
Solve problems involving converting units of time
Compare and classify geometric shapes including quadrilaterals and triangles
Identify acute and obtuse angles, and compare angles by size
Identify lines of symmetry in 2D shapes, in different orientations
Complete a simple symmetric figure with respect to a specific line of symmetry
Recognise where angles are greater than 2 right angles and know the term ‘straight’ angle refers to right angles together
Multiplication and Division
Recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 x 12
Circuits and conductors
Identify common appliances that run on electricity
Construct a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming basic parts, including cells, wires, buzzers, bulbs and switches
Identify whether or not a lamp will light in a simple series circuit, based on whether or not the lamp is part of a complete loop with a battery
Recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit
Recognise some common conductors and insulators, and associate metals with being good conductors
Compare and contrast physical and human characteristics of regions of the UK, Europe and North America.
Explore geographical similarities and differences through studying a region of the UK, Europe and North America.
Describe and demonstrate a good understanding of mountains (for example in snow covered regions of Britain, Europe and North America.

Use maps, atlases, globes and digital computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied.
Use four figure grid references, mapping symbols and keys.
