Starting School at Hutton Rudby

Young children

Joining a new school is the beginning of an exciting journey. At Hutton Rudby, we pride ourselves on making every new arrival feel welcomed, settled, and ready to thrive.

We want the move from nursery to Reception to feel seamless for children and their parents alike. We know how special and meaningful this stage is for the entire family. To do this, we offer a range of activities before and after places are allocated.

Before places are allocated there are:

  • Two information evenings to introduce parents to school. These feature presentations from the Headteacher and Reception Teacher / EYFS Lead along with a tour of the school.
  • An open morning taking place on a Saturday (usually in November). Children and parents are welcome to come to the school to meet members of staff and have a look around the school. This is a great opportunity to ask any questions and get a feel for the classroom and school.
  • Stay & Play opportunities for children and parents to experience the Reception classroom, resources and atmosphere.

Please contact school or check our social media for dates and times of these sessions.

After places have been allocated, we offer the following in the Summer Term:

  • New Starters Evening. Another chance to meet the Reception Team and Headteacher to gain an understanding of what to expect in September and beyond. You will receive a welcome pack at this meeting which contains an ‘All About Me’ sheet for you and your child to complete.
  • Nursery visits by the Reception teacher. These visits are a great opportunity for the teacher to see the children in a comfortable setting and talk to nursery staff about what works well for your child.
  • Transition morning. The children come and experience a full morning in school with their soon-to-be teacher.

If you think your child will require additional transition events, please contact the school office and we will discuss this with you.

Our transition into Reception class has been widely praised by parents. Parent surveys over the past several years have shown that 100% of parents either agree or strongly agree that they are happy with the transition into Reception. The vast majority of parents strongly agree with that statement.

The word cloud below shows a selection of the comments that we received about our transition into Reception:

We also give children transferring from other schools the opportunity to have a thorough transition into our school. As every child is different, we work closely with the parents and children to create a bespoke transition that suits their needs and circumstances. This usually includes transition or taster days / mornings and meeting with their new teacher.

We hope this page gives you a clear picture of what to expect and our website answers most of your questions. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Our Classes

Once your child has settled into school life, their journey through Hutton Rudby Primary School continues with carefully planned progression through each stage of primary education. Along the way, there are national assessments such as the Year 1 Phonics check and the Year 6 SATs. Our teachers prepare children with care so that they feel confident and ready, and we keep parents fully informed at every stage.

Children are taught in classes according to age. They begin their school lives in Reception Class, where they are in the Foundation stage of the National Curriculum.

Key Stage 1 (KS1) of the National Curriculum is followed between the ages of 5 and 7. These year groups are called Year 1 and Year 2 (Y1 and Y2).

In Year 1, children complete a phonics assessment. This can be retaken in Year 2.

After Year 2, the children follow the Key Stage 2 (KS2) of the National Curriculum whilst they are in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 (Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6).

In Year 4, children complete a multiplication assessment. At the end of Key Stage 2, children take the Key Stage 2 Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs) before moving into secondary school. How the school perform in these tests is reportable to parents and governors. Our most recent results can be found here. Children in Year 4 can also experience their first night away with the school as we join our other Synergy Schools on a campout – a very popular evening indeed!

Our Year 5 children build on their campout experience by visiting Bewerley Park for a week-long residential in which they take on all manner of exciting outdoor activities.

In Year 6, the children tackle the national SATs, take on roles such as Head Prefect, lead services in church and join their Synergy friends on a trip to London before bidding us a fond farewell as they move on to Secondary School.

Here's a quick tour of our school, provided by our School Radio Team.  We hope you enjoy it.
