End of Year Expectations for Maths in Reception
Please note that in line with the progress children make this list is subject to change and the objectives
are not necessarily taught in the order listed below.
|Maths in Reception|
| Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. |
Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer.
They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.
|Space, Shape, Measure|
| Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. |
They recognise, create and describe patterns.
They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.
|Creating and Thinking Critically|
| Creating and thinking critically are fundamental processes in making sense of experiences and developing thought. |
Creativity in this sense is not about being talented in the arts, but a core aspect of the thinking process, involving imagination and helping us ‘to think flexibly . . . and come up with original ideas’ (Stewart, 2011: 78).
Children will be encouraged and supported to:
Think of ideas Find ways to solve problems
Find new ways to do things
Make links and noticing patterns in their experience
Make predictions and texting their ideas
Develop ideas of grouping, sequencing and cause and effect
Check how well their activities are going and changing strategy as needed
Review how well their chosen approach worked
